Plant free trees
Live in the City of LA? You can get up to seven free shade trees for your yard delivered to your front door. No permit needed when planting on your private property.
If you’re outside city limits, check out countywide programs too.

DIY your shade
Pop up an umbrella, install a small sail, or add a trellis—no permit needed for most structures under 120 sq. ft (LA County PW). Larger structures may require permits. If you are in the City of L.A., call 311 or visit LADBS.org to double-check.
